A second-stage cutoff left both satellites short of their target orbit. Artemis, ESA's data-relay and navigation technology testbed, salvaged itself by spiraling up to geostationary altitude over many months on its own ion thrusters, an unplanned rescue that took the better part of two years. The Japanese BSAT-2b satellite had no such option and was written off.
