Envisat was the largest civilian Earth observation satellite ever built, an eight-tonne ESA platform carrying ten instruments to monitor the atmosphere, oceans, land and ice from a Sun-synchronous polar orbit. It returned more than a decade of environmental data before contact was abruptly lost in April 2012.
