This flight closed out Ariane 4, the workhorse that had anchored Arianespace's commercial business since 1988 and flown a long unbroken run of successes into the era of its larger Ariane 5 successor. Fittingly, the final launch carried a commercial communications satellite to geostationary transfer, the kind of payload the vehicle had built its reputation on.
