Ariane 5 ES carried the third of the European Space Agency's Automated Transfer Vehicles, an uncrewed cargo ship of about 20 tonnes at launch. It docked with the aft port of the ISS Zvezda module on 28 March 2012, five days after liftoff, and was deorbited on 3 October 2012, burning up over the atmosphere as planned.

Liftoff slipped from 9 March so the cargo stowage could be rechecked.
