MTG-I1, also designated Meteosat-12, was the first of the Meteosat Third Generation satellites, developed jointly by ESA and EUMETSAT. It introduced the Flexible Combined Imager (FCI) with 16 spectral channels - compared to 12 on the preceding SEVIRI instrument - capable of capturing full-disk images of Earth every 10 minutes. It also carries Europe's first operational Lightning Imager, the first geostationary instrument over Europe capable of detecting both intra-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning in day and night conditions.
