Beidou 1A

China's first navigation satellite, opening the experimental BeiDou-1 system. Unlike GPS or GLONASS, this first generation parked its spacecraft in geostationary orbit and used an active two-way ranging scheme, giving regional coverage over China and its neighbors from just a handful of satellites rather than a large constellation. A second satellite that December made the pair operational.
