Its three instruments - a Lyman-alpha Solar Telescope, a Hard X-ray Imager, and a Full-disk Vector MagnetoGraph - make it the first spacecraft to simultaneously observe solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and the Sun's magnetic field, with the aim of understanding how solar magnetic activity drives major eruptions.
