Apstar 6E was the first Chinese geostationary communications satellite to use an all-electric propulsion system, and the inaugural satellite on the DFH-3E small-GEO platform. The full-electric propulsion scheme made it the first telecommunications satellite in the world to complete a fully autonomous transfer from a low parking orbit to geostationary altitude.

Positioned at 134°E alongside Apstar-6C and 6D, the satellite serves the Southeast Asian broadband market with 25 Ku-band user beams and three Ka-band gateway beams for a combined throughput of 30 Gbps.
