Kalpana-1

India's first launch to a geostationary transfer orbit, demonstrating the PSLV's reach beyond its usual polar-orbit role. The payload, MetSat-1, was India's first dedicated meteorological satellite; it was renamed Kalpana-1 in 2003 in memory of astronaut Kalpana Chawla, lost in the Columbia accident.
