HTV-8 carried the third set of six lithium-ion batteries replacing the aging nickel-hydrogen ones in the International Space Station's solar power modules. A fire at the launch pad forced the first attempt on 10 September to be postponed, and the flight left two weeks later.

Also aboard was RWASAT-1, Rwanda's first satellite, which was released from the station on 20 November 2019 together with the small satellites NARSSCube-1 and AQT-D.
