HTV-X1 was the inaugural mission for JAXA's new-generation cargo ship, succeeding the HTV series. The mission was also the 300th resupply mission to the International Space Station. Several cubesats were deployed from the ISS in early February 2026; Ten-Koh 2 was separately released from HTV-X1 on 11 March 2026, after the spacecraft departed the ISS.

Maiden flight of H3 in the H3-24W configuration, its heaviest variant with four solid rocket boosters and a wide long fairing. At 63 metres, H3-24W is the tallest rocket launched by Japan as of 2025.
