Martian Moons eXploration

JAXA's mission to the Martian system and the first attempt to retrieve surface material from Phobos and return it to Earth. The spacecraft will survey both Phobos and Deimos before landing on Phobos to collect samples, with a capsule return targeted for 2031.

Idefix, a roughly 23 kg rover built jointly by CNES and DLR, will be deployed onto Phobos ahead of MMX's landing to characterize the surface.
