Khayyam
Khayyam was a Russian-built Earth observation satellite - based on the Kanopus-V bus - with 1.2-metre optical resolution, delivered to Iran under a contract that predated Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Iran stated the satellite would serve civilian purposes including agriculture, natural resource management, border monitoring, and disaster response, and maintained full operational control from launch.
The mission drew significant Western scrutiny: US and European officials warned that imagery from Khayyam could be used to enhance surveillance of military targets in Ukraine. Iran denied the characterisation and reiterated that the satellite was entirely under Iranian operation.
