After launch, Kosmos 2588 was manoeuvred into a co-orbital path shadowing the US reconnaissance satellite USA-338, making a close approach of roughly 94 km every four days - the 4th time in five years a Russian Nivelir satellite had been deployed to trail a US optical reconnaissance spacecraft.
