A soft ocean touchdown test ended early when the first stage exhausted its liquid oxygen during the landing burn. NASA flew thermal-imaging infrared sensors on the descent to collect supersonic retropropulsion data of interest for future Mars entry techniques — the test produced useful data even though the recovery attempt did not.
