SES-9, at roughly 5,270 kg, was the heaviest payload Falcon 9 had flown to a geostationary transfer orbit, leaving the second stage with little margin and the first stage with almost none for recovery. SpaceX attempted a GTO drone ship landing for the first time; the stage completed a controlled reentry and navigated to Of Course I Still Love You, but came in at near-maximum velocity and hit the deck hard, destroying the booster while returning useful data on high-energy recovery profiles.
