Notes from the launch
One hundred and forty-three satellites on a single rocket. On 24 January 2021, a Falcon 9 lifted from Cape Canaveral carrying the first dedicated mission of SpaceX's Smallsat Rideshare Program, deploying its stack of spacecraft into a 525 km sun-synchronous orbit. The number surpassed the previous record of 104 set by ISRO's PSLV-C37 in February 2017, a mark that had stood for nearly four years.
The payloads came from operators across eleven countries — 48 Planet SuperDove imaging satellites, 36 Swarm SpaceBEE communications nodes, 8 Kepler nanosats, 8 Spire Lemur-2 sensors, 10 Starlinks, and dozens of smaller CubeSats alongside two orbital transfer stages. The mission inaugurated SpaceX's commercial rideshare service as a regular line of business, offering booked slots on a pooled manifest rather than the bespoke dedicated-launch model that had defined the small-satellite market to that point.
