Double Asteroid Redirection Test
Success
NOV 24202106:21:02 UTCDART traveled to the Didymos binary asteroid system and struck the moonlet Dimorphos on 26 September 2022, shortening Dimorphos's orbital period by roughly 32 minutes. It was the first time any agency had deliberately altered the trajectory of a natural celestial body, and the result validated kinetic impactor technology as a viable planetary defense method.
The LICIACube cubesat flew as a co-manifested secondary payload to observe and document the impact from close range.
