CSG-2
Second of four planned COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation satellites, jointly operated by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Italian Ministry of Defense. The constellation's X-band synthetic aperture radar delivers sub-metric resolution imagery for civilian uses - including disaster monitoring - and national security surveillance. Originally scheduled for Vega-C in 2021, the 2,200 kg satellite switched to Falcon 9 after pandemic delays and two consecutive Vega failures pushed ASI to purchase a new launch slot in September 2021.
The booster, B1052, had flown as a Falcon Heavy side core on Arabsat-6A and STP-2 in 2019. SpaceX converted it to a standalone Falcon 9 first stage for this flight - the first time the company had performed such a conversion.
