Part of the Solar Terrestrial Probes program. Under NASA's SMD Rideshare Initiative, two secondary spacecraft were launched along with IMAP to the Sun-Earth L1 point.

In September 2020, NASA selected SpaceX to launch the IMAP mission, which studies the boundary of the heliosphere, a magnetic barrier surrounding our solar system. The total launch cost is approximately US$109.4 million.
