Maiden flight of the Atlas V and the first launch of an EELV-class rocket, the new family developed for the U.S. Air Force's heavy launch needs. The vehicle's common core booster was powered by the Russian-built RD-180, the first throttleable main engine to fly on a U.S. expendable rocket. It carried the Hot Bird 6 broadcasting satellite for Eutelsat.
