Within weeks of reaching orbit, the pair - originally designated the Radiation Belt Storm Probes - detected a temporary third radiation belt: a narrow ring of energetic electrons that formed after a solar storm and persisted for about a month before an interplanetary shock dispersed it.

Van Allen Probe B ceased operations on 19 July 2019; Van Allen Probe A was deactivated on 18 October 2019.
