Molniya

Soviet medium-lift interplanetary and communications rocket

A four-stage R-7 derivative designed to fling payloads into the highly elliptical orbit that now bears its name — a shape that parks a satellite over northern latitudes for hours at a time, perfect for Soviet communications. Molniya carried early interplanetary probes to Venus and Mars as well, then flew until 2010.
