Fengyun 3F succeeded FY-3C (in service since 2013) in the morning equatorial crossing slot of China's FY-3 polar meteorological constellation, entering operational service on 1 July 2024.

The satellite introduced two instruments new to the FY-3 series: the OMS-nadir and OMS-limb (Ozone Monitoring Suite), which together add dedicated monitoring of atmospheric ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and aerosols from both nadir and limb viewing angles.
