AlSat-1 was the first Algerian satellite and the first member of the Disaster Monitoring Constellation, a group of small imaging satellites coordinated to provide rapid coverage of natural disasters. It was built with Surrey Satellite Technology under a program that trained Algerian engineers in spacecraft development. The Rubin-3 secondary payload was left attached to the upper stage to gather performance data.
