First successful flight of the Briz-M, the storable-propellant upper stage that would become the workhorse for Proton's heavier geostationary missions. The stage's previous attempt had failed during the Proton's second-stage burn a year earlier, so this was the first time a Briz-M fired in flight; it placed the Gorizont communications satellite into orbit.
