Zvezda was the first fully Russian-built component of the International Space Station and the one that made it habitable: it carried the early living quarters, life support, propulsion, and attitude control the outpost had lacked. Launched on a Proton, it docked automatically to the aft port of Zarya on 26 July 2000, becoming the third element of the station and clearing the way for the first resident crew to move aboard that November.
