WMAP mapped tiny temperature ripples across the cosmic microwave background from a perch at the Sun-Earth L2 point, the afterglow of the Big Bang resolved more finely than ever before. Its measurements pinned down the age, geometry and composition of the universe and turned cosmology into a precision science. The spacecraft observed for nine years before being parked in a heliocentric graveyard orbit.
