AUG 08200116:13:00 UTCGenesis flew to the Sun-Earth L1 point to trap a sample of the solar wind on ultra-pure collector wafers, the first NASA sample return since Apollo and the first to gather material from beyond the Moon. When the capsule came back to Utah in 2004 a reversed deceleration sensor kept the parachutes from firing and it slammed into the desert at high speed. Some collectors survived intact, and the contaminated fragments still yielded usable solar-wind science.
