CONTOUR was a NASA Discovery-class probe meant to fly past two or more comet nuclei, beginning with Encke. The launch placed it in a holding orbit around Earth, but six weeks later its solid-fuel kick motor failed during the burn meant to send it into solar orbit, and the spacecraft broke apart. Tracking telescopes spotted multiple fragments where CONTOUR should have been.
