JAN 13200300:45:00 UTCICESat carried a single instrument, the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System, built to measure the elevation of the polar ice sheets from orbit to within a few centimetres and so track whether they were gaining or losing mass. The lasers proved the mission's weak point: reliability problems dogged the instrument from early on, and ICESat operated only intermittently before the last of its three lasers failed in 2009.
