The first of NASA's twin Mars Exploration Rovers headed for Gusev Crater, a basin chosen because an ancient channel appeared to have drained into it like a lakebed. Built for a 90-day mission, Spirit instead worked for years, eventually digging up silica deposits that on Earth form only through hot-water activity. Its twin Opportunity followed three weeks later to the opposite side of the planet.
