H-I

Japanese Delta-derived rocket with a hydrogen upper stage

The last of Japan's licence-built Delta rockets, and the first to fly a Japanese hydrogen-fuelled engine, the LE-5 on its second stage. The first stage was still an American Thor design. H-I flew nine times from Tanegashima between 1986 and 1992, all of them successful, and handed over to H-II, which replaced the American first stage with a Japanese one.
