Juno I
American IRBM-derived small-lift orbital rocket
A Jupiter-C fitted with a fourth solid-fuel stage, Juno I launched Explorer 1 on 31 January 1958 — the first US satellite, and the one that discovered the Van Allen radiation belts. Six launches in 1958; only three reached orbit, but the first was enough to matter.
