Mercury-Redstone
American missile-derived crewed suborbital rocket
On 5 May 1961, Alan Shepard rode a Mercury-Redstone 116 miles high — a fifteen-minute arc that made him the first American in space. The rocket was a modified Army ballistic missile, and the flight was suborbital, but it answered the question the Soviet Sputnik had made urgent.
