Sputnik
Soviet R-7-derived first satellite launcher
The Sputnik rocket was an R-7 ICBM with just enough upper stage to reach orbit. On 4 October 1957 it lofted an 84-kilogram aluminium sphere that beeped — and changed every country's space priorities overnight. A month later, the same rocket carried Laika, the first animal in orbit.
