Voskhod 1 squeezes three cosmonauts into a single capsule in October — the first multi-crew spaceflight, no spacesuits worn. In the USA, Saturn I makes its first orbital flights in January and May, and Mariner 4 departs in November on a trajectory to Mars that will return the first close-up photographs of another planet the following summer.
