Aleksey Leonov leaves his spacecraft for the first spacewalk
Leonov floated outside Voskhod 2 for 12 minutes. His suit swelled so much that he had to let air out to squeeze back inside.
Alexei Leonov steps outside Voskhod 2 in March for the first spacewalk; the USA answers with Ed White on Gemini 4 eleven weeks later. By December, Gemini 6 and 7 pull off the first orbital rendezvous, while the Soviet Union runs Kosmos reconnaissance flights through most weeks of the year.
Leonov floated outside Voskhod 2 for 12 minutes. His suit swelled so much that he had to let air out to squeeze back inside.
US networks broadcast the camera feed as it arrived. The probe sent back more than 5,800 pictures before hitting the crater Alphonsus.
Intelsat's first satellite hung over the Atlantic, carrying up to 240 telephone calls or one TV channel.
It lifted a 12-tonne science satellite. Proton later launched all seven Salyut space stations and six of the seven modules of Mir.
The Soviet probe took 25 pictures covering 19 million square kilometers. It later sent them again from 31.5 million kilometers away to test long-range radio.
The Soviet probe crashed on Venus in March 1966. Its radio had died two weeks earlier, so it sent nothing back from the planet.
France became the third country to reach orbit with its own rocket, after the Soviet Union and the US.
Gemini 6A's crew steered to Gemini 7 in the first rendezvous of two crewed spacecraft. They flew side by side for five hours.
