China's Chang'e 3 lander released the Yutu rover. The last soft landing on the Moon had been the Soviet Luna 24, in 1976.

ISRO launches the Mars Orbiter Mission on a PSLV-XL on November 5, bound for what will become the first successful Asian Mars mission. Chang'e 3 delivers the Yutu rover to the Moon in December — the first soft landing there since 1976.

South Korea's Naro rocket had failed in 2009 and 2010. Its lower stage came from Russia, and the upper stage was Korean.

A Russian Proton rocket crashes seconds after liftoff
Three of the Proton's rotation sensors had been installed upside down. The crash destroyed three satellites for GLONASS, Russia's navigation system.

Mangalyaan entered Mars orbit in September 2014. India was the first country to do it on its first attempt, and the first in Asia.

SpaceX listed Falcon 9 flights from $56 million. An Ariane 5 launch, which usually carries two satellites, cost about $200 million.

Europe sends Gaia to chart a billion Milky Way stars
Gaia worked until 2025 and measured nearly two billion stars. Its data showed the Milky Way swallowed a smaller galaxy about 10 billion years ago.
