Space Shuttle Atlantis docks with Russia's Mir station
The docked pair weighed about 225 tonnes, the largest spacecraft yet in orbit. It was the first US-Russian docking since Apollo-Soyuz in 1975.
Atlantis docks with Mir on June 29 — the first Shuttle–Mir link-up, opening the joint programme that will train both nations for the ISS years ahead. In December, Galileo drops a probe into Jupiter's atmosphere — the first to enter the giant planet's clouds — and the SOHO solar observatory launches to L1 on an Atlas IIAS from Cape Canaveral.
The docked pair weighed about 225 tonnes, the largest spacecraft yet in orbit. It was the first US-Russian docking since Apollo-Soyuz in 1975.
Her flight took Discovery within 11 meters of Russia's Mir station. The close pass rehearsed the Shuttle dockings that began that June.
Thagard spent 115 days in space, most of it on Mir. That topped the 84 days Skylab astronauts logged in 1973 and 1974.
Liquid helium kept ISO cold enough to sense faint heat from space. It also studied dusty disks where planets form around young stars.
SOHO marked 30 years in space in December 2025. Its images also led to the discovery of more than 5,000 comets.
