The uncrewed capsule climbed 5,800 km above Earth, higher than any spacecraft built for astronauts had gone since Apollo 17 in 1972.

The test capsule plunged back into the atmosphere at 11 km/s. China used the same approach to bring Moon rock home in 2020.

One of the Antares rocket's Soviet-built engines, more than 40 years old, failed seconds after liftoff. Antares flew again in 2016 with new engines.

Japan launches Hayabusa2 to bring back rock from an asteroid
Hayabusa2 collected 5.4 grams of rock and dust from asteroid Ryugu. Its capsule landed in the Australian outback in December 2020.

The test flew with an unpowered upper stage, and the capsule fell back from 126 km into the Bay of Bengal.

Russia began designing Angara in 1992 so it could reach space without Baikonur, the Soviet-era spaceport left in Kazakhstan.
